Mission

The USF School of Geosciences is home to the Geographic Information Science Technologies and Remote Sensing (GIST & RS) Center of Academic Excellence (CAE), a designation awarded by the National Geospatial-intelligence Agency (NGA). We incorporate cutting-edge technologies with state-of-the-art computing hardware and software to provide innovative solutions to geospatial questions. Working in partnership with the NGA, the School of Geosciences seeks to prepare students to qualify for internships and careers in the geospatial intelligence, GEOINT, community. School of Geosciences students will be given greater consideration for positions within the GEOINT community.

Our faculty are dedicated to developing course curricula that use a variety of geospatial technologies which are applied to real-world situations to provide novel solutions. We focus on creative research, specialized education for our students, and a multidisciplinary approach to develop and facilitate greater understanding of GIST and RM to enhance our understanding of the world from local, regional, national or global perspectives.

Vision

Our vision is to engage in collaborative research that will have a broad community of participants in solving questions and problems in areas of human geography, sustainability, resource management, climate change, hydrology, urban transportation, urban planning, public health, archaeology, anthropology, biology, natural heritage preservation, geophysics, seismology, geology, natural hazards, water resources, karst environments, coastal geomorphology, tectonics and many others. This vision is met by setting high research and academic standards which produces quality solutions as well as undergraduate and graduate students with a superior education in geospatial technologies.
